U.S. warns travellers about Turks & Caicos crime wave

The United States government has issued a cautionary travel advisory for the Turks and Caicos islands, following a notable increase in crime, including sexual assaults - particularly in Providenciales. Travellers were also warned of the risk of severe consequences for carrying firearms or ammunition, including arrest, jail time and/or heavy fines. The warning said local laws were strictly enforced, especially at the airport when people left the country, and that possession of so much as a bullet in luggage could lead to arrest, detention and heavy fines.

Health officials investigate single Legionnaires’ disease case in Grand Cayman

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hilary Wolf said Legionella was a naturally occurring bacterium that was commonly found in man-made water systems. She said environmental detection did not mean that illness would follow and said the Ministry’s response was consistent with best practice for a single confirmed case. “Legionella is a naturally occurring bacterium commonly found in man-made water systems,” Dr. Wolf said. “It is important to note that environmental detection does not mean that illness will follow. As it relates to our directives to the HSA, our response is evidence-based and consistent with best practices relating to a single confirmed case. At this time, there is no evidence of any wider risk. The Ministry and the Public Health Department will continue its oversight to ensure ongoing adherence to the public health protocols. Our investigation continues, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
