Celebrate Cayman District Display concludes in West Bay

Celebrate Cayman’s Travelling
District Display has made its way to West Bay.

The display opens for public viewing at
the Church of God Chapel, West Bay (on Town Hall Road) on Wednesday
20 February and continues until Saturday 23 February. Opening times
are 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, and 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. on
Saturday.

This is the final stop for the display,
which began its journey across the Cayman Islands in September of
last year. The display has visited every district in Grand Cayman as
well as Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

The mini display was curated by the
Cayman Islands National Museum and features artefacts that share the
story of the Coat of Arms. The expanded Coat of Arms exhibition which
brings our first national symbol to life in a whole new way is open
at the Cayman Islands National Museum through May 2019.

Motorists Advised to Exercise Caution During Valentine’s Mile Race, 10 February

Race
Caribbean will be hosting their annual Valentine’s Mile road race
on Sunday, 10 February from 4:00-4:30PM. Participants will start at
Goring Avenue and travel south onto Walkers Road then West onto
Memorial Avenue, north onto South Church Street and end at Bayshore
Mall via Warwick Drive.

Motorists
are asked to exercise caution if travelling in these areas on Sunday
afternoon.

Cayman Islands: Road Closure on Printers way – Local Access Only

The National Roads Authority (NRA) will be continuing road works on Printer Way from Shedden Road to Thomas Russell Avenue, as part of the larger Elgin Avenue & Crewe Road Extension project. 

Works are scheduled for tomorrow February 5th and Wednesday February 6thbetween the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm each day.  Printer Way will be open to local access only during this time.

Drivers are asked to keep watch for traffic diversions and to drive with caution to ensure their safety and that of the work crews.

the brainchild of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, who reached out
to the Ministry for support.

Cayman Islands Coco Fest at Pedro St James

The Management and staff of Pedro St James invites the public to the fourth annual Coco Fest set for Saturday 9th February from 12:00pm to 6:00pm at the Pedro St James National Historic Site, Pedro Castle Road, Savannah.

Sponsored by Fidelity Bank Cayman Ltd., Coco Fest brings together local cooks, craftsmen, producers and farmers through a shared love for the coconut, in a fun and interactive environment.

The event provides an avenue for local micro businesses to showcase their coconut-inspired products to the community, while allowing guests to indulge in an array of creative, cottage industry products which often cannot be purchased in stores.

Cultural demonstration on the uses of coconut throughout Cayman’s history will be held on site by local artisans.

Admission is only $5.00 per person while entry for children under 12 is free with $1.00 for each entry fee benefits Meals on Wheels Cayman.

Cayman Islands NRA Continues Road Improvements along Shamrock Road Between Midsummer Drive and the Dr. Tomlinson Roundabout

The National Roads Authority (NRA) along with its subcontractors will be carrying out road paving works on Shamrock Road from Midsummer Drive to the Dr. Tomlinson Roundabout. The aim of the proposed works is to upgrade both the drainage and deteriorated road surface.

Cayman Islands: Smoking Cessation Classes: ‘I Can Quit’

The Public Health Department advises smokers who wish to quit that there are some spaces left in an upcoming smoking cessation class. The sessions will run every Wednesday from 5.15 p.m. to 6.45 p.m, beginning on 6 February 2019. The venue for classes is the new Public Health Administration office located at the Smith Road Centre on the second floor. Cayman Islands Public Holidays for 2019 Listed

 All public holidays for 2019, with the exception of the Queen’s Birthday holiday in June, are now confirmed.

· The Queen’s Birthday holiday is anticipated to be on Monday, 10 June but remains subject to confirmation.

· Christmas holidays are midweek next year.

Grand Cayman (GIS) – Public Holidays in the Cayman Islands for 2019, except the Queen’s Birthday holiday, are officially confirmed by the Deputy Governor’s Office.

The Governor’s Office informs the Trooping of the Colour, annual ceremony held to commemorate the Queen’s Official Birthday, is likely to be on Saturday, 8 June 2019. Consequently, the official Queen’s Birthday public holiday in the Cayman Islands is likely to be Monday, 10 June 2019. Official confirmation is expected in early 2019.

The 2019 public holidays are:

Ash Wednesday: Wednesday, 6 March;

Good Friday: Friday, 19 April;

Easter Monday: Monday, 22 April;

KAABOO Cayman Feb. 15-16, 2019

The KAABOO Cayman festival has announced plans to donate some of its proceeds to local nonprofit agencies on the island.

In a news release, festival organizers said $1 of every ticket sold would be set aside to support three local and one international charitable groups. Two-day passes for the festival are expected to start at more than $200 when the lineup of entertainers is announced at 7:30 a.m. on May 15. Officials said they hope to sell 11,000 tickets.

The festival is scheduled for Feb. 15-16, 2019.

KAABOO Cayman will be supporting the National Gallery,

Feed Our Future and the Cayman National Cultural Foundation, along with MusicCares, a Recording Academy program that has been a partner in the KAABOO Del Mar festival in California.

Cross Currents: The 1st Cayman Islands
Biennial

Much like the passage of water across
the open seas, the face of contemporary art in Cayman is constantly
shifting, reflecting the interweaving of tradition and
contemporaneity that is a defining characteristic of these Islands in
the 21st century.

Through their innovative use of new
media and techniques, as well as their engagement with timely social,
political and environmental concerns, the artists in Cross Currents
offer us a window into contemporary art making on these shores.

The Cross Currents Exhibition Opening
will be on Friday 8th February

The Governor Visits the Gallery

On the 25th of January the National
Gallery had the pleasure of a visit from Governor Roper and his wife
Elisabeth.

Director Natalie Urquhart toured the
couple around the facility and the collections, giving them a
comprehensive history of art in the Cayman Islands and the role of
the National Gallery as a part of this history. All of the staff
members here at the Gallery also had the lovely opportunity to
introduce themselves and have a quick chat with Mr & Mrs. Roper.

What's On This Week at the National
Gallery

To compliment the opening of the Cross
Currents Exhibition on Friday, this weekend we are hosting two
exciting events here at the Gallery.

international guests Dr. Veerle Poupeye, Art Historian and Former
Director and Chief Curator

of the Jamaican Biennial, and Erica
Moiah James, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Art
History at the University of Miami and the former Director of The
National Art Gallery of the Bahamas.

On Saturday the 9th of February we will
be holding a special lecture on the exploration of biennial
exhibitions throughout the Caribbean.

Road Closures and Traffic Diversions for KAABOO Festival

The RCIPS is advising the public of the following road closures and traffic diversions along West Bay Road and the Esterley Tibbetts Highway in order to facilitate the KAABOO Music & Arts Festival on Friday and Saturday, 15 and 16 February.

These road closures and diversions will be in place beginning from Thursday, 14 February at 12:00PM and continuing until Sunday, 17 February at 6:00AM.

There will be traffic diversions along West Bay Road at Lime Tree Bay Avenue and Seven Mile Public Beach and on Esterley Tibbets in the vicinity of the Kimpton Resort.

All public traffic travelling towards West Bay must remain in the right lane of the Esterley Tibbetts Highway upon passing the Public Beach roundabout. This traffic will not be permitted to turn onto West Bay Road at the Yacht Club roundabout but must continue on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway towards West Bay or turn right onto Yacht Drive.

Further details of traffic flow adjustments will follow at a later date. Road users travelling on West Bay Road and the Esterley Tibbetts Highway during these times are advised to pay attention to all road signs and to follow all traffic directions given by police officers.

National Planning Framework Public Consultation Period

The public now has more time to give their input on the National Planning Framework. Members of the public who wish to submit their feedback now have until Thursday, 28 February 2019. The document can be found on www.plancayman.ky, and feedback can be submitted through the website as well. Printed copies of the document can be viewed at the PlanCayman Information Counter, located in the lobby of the Government Administration Building. The National Planning Framework sets out the long-term goals for land use and physical development and is the first part of the  Cayman Islands Development Plan review. The document covers a number of areas of interest including land use, the natural environment, transportation, infrastructure, recreation and open spaces.
