Saildrone Voyager Helped U.S. Navy Seize $81 Million of Cocaine in the Caribbean

Saildrone's autonomous vessels are proving their value in both maritime security and ocean mapping. A Saildrone Voyager helped the U.S. Navy track a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean, leading to the seizure of cocaine valued at an estimated US$81 million, while the company's Surveyor vessel completed the autonomous mapping of the Cayman Islands' exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Details of the cocaine seizure, which took place on October 16, 2025, have only just been released, as an example of autonomous maritime systems in security missions, showing autonomous maritime systems are moving beyond trials into operational use.

The mission involved the U.S. Navy, Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleet. A Saildrone Voyager detected and identified a target designated by JIATF-S, tracked the vessel and passed information to naval forces. A U.S. Navy ship then intercepted the suspect vessel in a drug interdiction operation, and the cocaine was seized.

According to the Navy, the uncrewed vessel played a direct role in the operation by providing persistent surveillance and maritime domain awareness in a busy stretch of Caribbean waters. The Voyager remained on station for long periods and helped crews build a clearer picture of activity at sea before the interdiction took place.

The vessel was not acting alone. It formed part of a wider network of naval and interagency assets that supported the interdiction effort. Once the target had been identified and tracked, a crewed Navy ship moved in and completed the seizure.

The seizure was valued at about $81 million, based on the cocaine recovered. The Navy said the result showed autonomous systems could support operational security work, not just trials or demonstrations.

U.S. Navy says unmanned systems are now part of daily maritime surveillance

The Navy has operated Saildrone Voyager vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since 2023. The platform has been used to support U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleet by providing persistent maritime surveillance across areas often used by transnational criminal organisations.

Rear Admiral Carlos Sardiello, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleet, said: "This interdiction is the culmination of months of refining our tactics, techniques, and procedures for these advanced systems in the region. The ability to detect a target, have that vessel identified by our team on the watch floor, and then coordinate with assets on scene to complete the interdiction is a testament to the hard work of our Sailors and our commitment to integrating unmanned systems into fleet operations," he said.

Commander Jon Williams, NAVSOUTH’s Technology and Innovation Director, said the Navy was learning how to combine different autonomous tools to widen its reach.

"By layering unmanned surface and airborne systems, we create a highly effective maritime domain awareness network. Operating these systems at scale allows us to accelerate their development and integration across the entire Navy."

Long-endurance surveillance and a new contract

Saildrone Voyager USVs can remain at sea for months, unlike crewed patrol vessels that must return to port more often. That endurance allowed them to watch wide maritime areas continuously while reducing the need to keep costly ships on station. For maritime authorities, that meant more eyes on routes used by smugglers and fewer gaps in surveillance.

The Navy awarded Saildrone a new $16.3 million task order to continue operating Voyager USVs in support of counter-drug and counter-illicit trafficking missions through 2027. The extension covered work in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific and showed that the service intended to keep the systems in active use.

Saildrone President John Mustin said the long deployment period showed the value of keeping the vehicles on station for extended periods.

"The continuity of Saildrone’s presence along the southern border for nearly three years demonstrates the strategic value we bring as the world’s most experienced operators of unmanned surface vehicles. Our unmatched ability to remain on station and on mission in critical regions for months at a time is why our fleet serves as a powerful deterrent to bad actors. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Navy in its mission to secure the country’s maritime approaches and southern border."

Saildrone’s mission in waters around the Cayman Islands was philanthropically funded by the London & Amsterdam Trust Company Limited, a Cayman-based organisation. Before the survey, only around 20,000 square kilometres of the Cayman Islands' EEZ had been mapped using modern multibeam sonar technology, primarily around the Cayman Trench.

Over approximately 300 mission days, Saildrone surveyed around 90,000 square kilometres of seabed at depths ranging from 20 to 7,000 metres, carrying out more than 900 sound-velocity profile casts to support accurate bathymetric mapping. The project focused in part on four key fishing banks - 60 Mile Bank, Lawfords Bank, Pickle Bank and 12 Mile Bank - which are important biodiversity hotspots supporting fisheries, tourism and recreation, and are indicators of the health of the Cayman Islands' marine ecosystem.

The new high-resolution seabed data is expected to strengthen the Cayman Government's ability to support maritime safety and navigation, sustainable fisheries, offshore energy planning, responsible seabed mining and marine mineral exploration, and the conservation of vulnerable marine ecosystems.

The raw bathymetric, backscatter and ocean-profile data will now be transferred to the UK Hydrographic Office for processing before being formally delivered to the Cayman Government. The UK Hydrographic Office also plans to update its nautical charts for the Cayman Islands using the new data, while a low-resolution dataset will be shared with Seabed 2030 to support its goal of mapping the world's seabed by 2030.

During the mission, Saildrone overcame operational challenges including unprecedented sargassum blooms and severe weather, developing new techniques to manage biofouling and maintain survey operations, while demonstrating the Surveyor's ability to operate safely in sea state seven conditions.
