Cayman mosquito specialists share control experience at Oman symposium

The Cayman Islands mosquito-control experience has been shared with researchers, vector-control professionals and government representatives from across the Gulf region.

The international 2nd Symposium on Mosquito Vector Control Management, held in Salalah, Oman on August 25 and 26, offered an opportunity for MRCU to compare mosquito control approaches and discuss future collaboration relevant to the Cayman Islands.

MRCU Senior Research Officer Carlos Pecanha spoke at the symposium, where delegates discussed challenges, technologies and strategies for managing mosquitoes and other disease vectors.

The meeting brought together about 200 participants from countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Yemen. It also included World Health Organization presentations on dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

Cayman’s experience abroad

MRCU’s invitation to present alongside the University of Glasgow showed the unit’s standing in regional mosquito-control work. It also gave Cayman an opportunity to test its methods against approaches used in countries facing larger or different disease pressures.

Pecanha delivered a presentation on the challenges of urban vector control and discussed the modes of action and practical considerations linked to newer mosquito-control technologies. MRCU said the presentation prompted discussion among attendees and could lead to academic and technical collaboration in the future.

“Engaging with professionals and researchers from such diverse environments demonstrates that many of the challenges we face are shared globally,” Pecanha said.

“The Cayman Islands’ experience and strategies can provide valuable insights to help other countries strengthen their public health and vector-control efforts. At the same time, opportunities like this allow us to learn from the experiences and research of others and consider how those lessons might benefit our own work in Cayman,” he added.

The islands has not faced the scale of local dengue transmission seen in some heavily affected countries, but mosquito surveillance and dengue prevention remain important public health priorities. Even so, mosquito species capable of transmitting dengue, Zika and chikungunya are present in the region. That makes routine surveillance, control work and awareness of new technology relevant to the day-to-day protection of residents.

Long experience, but continued learning

MRCU said its participation reflected the unit’s wider engagement with international research and vector-control programmes. The organisation had more than five decades of experience in mosquito surveillance and control in the Cayman Islands, and it used the Oman event to share that knowledge and hear from colleagues working elsewhere.

The exchange comes at a time when mosquito-control programmes around the world, including in the Cayman Islands, are reassessing new technologies, shifting disease patterns and methods for handling urban mosquito populations.

Future collaboration and local readiness

The discussions in Salalah created opportunities for future academic and technical collaboration, according to MRCU.

The symposium also highlighted the importance of keeping pace with wider public-health efforts.

World Health Organization presentations on dengue, Zika and chikungunya have underlined that mosquito-borne diseases remain a concern across regions, even as the scale of the challenge differs from country to country.
