Cayman Airways has added another four Friday flights between Grand Cayman and La Ceiba after what the airline says has been a popular summer season on the Honduras route.

The additional run began on August 21 and continues through 11 September, supplementing the national airline's regular Wednesday service. Three flights remain, on August 28 and September 4 and 11.

Flight KX2882 departs Grand Cayman at 12:35 and arrives in La Ceiba at 13:10 local time, a scheduled flight time of 35 minutes. The return flight, KX2883, leaves La Ceiba at 14:40 and arrives in Grand Cayman at 17:05.

The expansion follows extra Friday services on 17 and 24 July and 7 August, which Cayman Airways said were introduced “in response to increased travel demand”.

In all, the carrier has added seven Friday rotations between July and September.

Cayman Airways has not disclosed passenger totals or load factors for the route, making it difficult to quantify the increase in demand or determine what types of travellers are driving it.

The airline has, however, previously put on additional La Ceiba services during busy travel periods.

In 2023, it added three Monday flights in May followed by a weekly Tuesday service from June 20 through September 5. Cayman Airways said the expansion was designed “to meet the high demand for long-weekend travel during the summer months”.

A 17-year connection

Cayman Airways launched scheduled service between Grand Cayman and La Ceiba in June 2009.

La Ceiba, a major port city on Honduras's Caribbean coast, is a gateway to the Bay Islands, including Roatán and Utila, with onward connections available by air and ferry. Cayman Airways describes the city as the “eco-tourism and entertainment capital of Honduras”.

Over the years, the route has served passengers travelling between Cayman and Honduras as well as people connecting through Grand Cayman.

Cayman Airways President and CEO Fabian Whorms pointed to both sources of traffic when discussing the airline's Honduras network in 2017.

“Our La Ceiba route did increasingly well. We had a steady stream of passengers taking advantage of the connections Cayman Airways provides between Miami, La Ceiba and Grand Cayman,” he said.

Cayman Airways did not provide a breakdown at the time showing how many passengers began or ended their journeys in Cayman and how many were connecting onwards.

Community ties

The direct service also links Cayman with a sizeable Honduras-born community.

The 2021 Census recorded 2,883 residents born in Honduras, placing the country among the larger overseas places of birth represented in the Cayman Islands.

The figure measures birthplace rather than nationality, meaning it includes Honduras-born people who are Caymanian as well as residents with other immigration statuses.

Those community ties provide a potential market for people visiting friends and relatives, though publicly available data do not show how much of the airline's current La Ceiba traffic falls into that category.

Travel became easier for some Cayman residents in August 2024 when Honduras removed its visa requirement for Cayman Islands nationals and British nationals domiciled in the Cayman Islands.

Honduras's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the large Honduran population living in Cayman helped justify the exemption, saying the change would

“strengthen integration and contribute to mutual development”.

British nationals using the exemption are required to provide evidence that they are domiciled in the Cayman Islands.

Economic links

The relationship between Cayman and Honduras also extends into investment and trade.

Honduras's 2025 Tourism Sector Investment Guide, citing Central Bank of Honduras data, recorded US $19 million in net foreign direct investment flows from the Cayman Islands into Honduras in 2024.

The figure covers investment attributed to Cayman across the Honduran economy and should not be interpreted as US $19 million invested specifically in tourism.

It also comes with a qualification. Cayman's role as an international financial centre means the jurisdiction recorded as the source of an investment does not necessarily identify the nationality of the ultimate investor or where the underlying capital originated.

Merchandise trade is comparatively modest. UN trade data indicate Cayman imported about US $2 million worth of goods from Honduras in 2024, with seafood and mineral or construction-related products among the largest categories.

Those figures cover goods and exclude services such as tourism and air travel.

More flights to come

The additional services leave three more Friday flights scheduled for 28 August and 4 and 11 September.

Cayman Airways has not disclosed load factors for La Ceiba or how its passengers are split among Cayman residents, visitors and travellers connecting through Grand Cayman.

For now, the airline's schedule provides the clearest measure of demand: after adding three Friday flights earlier this summer, it has found room for four more.
