Cayman Islands: Call for Hurricane Shelter Volunteers

The Department of Children and Family Services is inviting individuals to sign up as shelter volunteers for this year’s Hurricane Season.

The Shelter Operations 2016 Hurricane Training for Shelter Managers & District Representatives Volunteers for this year’s Hurricane Season will be held over two days on Wednesday 25 May and Thursday 26 May at the Prospect Primary School Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Registration begins promptly at 5:30 p.m.

All volunteers MUST complete both days of training.

The Department of Environment and Marine Conservation International invite primary and high school students to participate in our SharKY poster competition as part of the SharKY Fest to help raise awareness about Cayman’s sharks and the shark conservation law. To enter, students should create a poster on the importance of sharks to our coasts and reefs. Submit posters by mail or in person to Dept. of Environment by 4PM on Friday (20 May.) Child Month Prayer Breakfast and Brac Family Day

As part of Child Month, you’re invited to a Circle of Love Prayer Breakfast at the Mariott Hotel on Saturday (21 May) from 830am. This will be followed by a Family Fun Day at South Side public beach in Cayman Brac from 10am until 2.

Free actor’s workshop 

Local actors can participate in a free workshop taking place on Saturday 21 May at time, at the Harquail Studio Theatre, as part of CayFilm.

Participants ages 16 and up, will learn from CayFilm Festival Director Tony Mark. The workshop will focus specifically on screen acting, which is different to stage acting.

Commenting on the upcoming workshop Mr. Mark says “As we prepare for production companies to come to the Cayman Islands, we want to make sure we have the skill set and acting chops necessary to get parts in these films.”

Actors will get to perfume scenes in front of a camera to gain experience. Mr. Mark also encourages film directors and writers to participate as well.

Cayman Islands: Mother to Child HIV Transmission and Congenital Syphilis

Educational sessions with Dr. Karina Palmer to discuss the elimination of mother to child HIV transmission and congenital syphilis in the Cayman Islands will be held on Wednesday, 25 May from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and on Tuesday, 31 May from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Next month, the regional validation committee is expected to verify that the Cayman Islands has been certified as free of both these conditions.

The educational sessions, explaining the implications of this verification, are open to the public and will take place in the Hibiscus Conference Room at Cayman Islands Hospital.
