False documents and identity fraud are often detected at the external borders of the EU. 

A sharp increase in the fraudulent use of documents in the Schengen area in recent years has led to a European Commission proposal to reinforce the European Border and Coast Guard’s capacity to tackle this issue with a system, called False and Authentic Documents Online, which will help EU Member States rapidly share images of genuine, false and forged documents. 

MEPs approved a Report on this issue drawn up by EPP Group MEP Roberta Metsola.
