LATEST ON SURVIVORS/FURTHER UPDATE: Cayman Islands: Bad car accident at East End - Fatalities/DOT statement/Acting Governor's statement

  • A Black Honda Accord travelling towards Bodden Town along Austin Connolly Drive was being driven by a 22 year old male from Jamaica (deceased), accompanied by two passengers, a 26 year old male who is currently unconscious in a serious but stable condition at GT Hospital and a 11 year old passenger who is in a stable condition and conscious.
  •  A Silver Kia Rio rental vehicle travelling towards East End along Austin Connolly Drive driven by a 76 year old male accompanied by a 71 and 68 year old females, all deceased, UK nationals on vacation, believed to be the wife of the driver and a close family relative.
  • The black Honda Accord and the silver Kia Rio were travelling in opposite directions when a head on collision occurred.
  • Police vehicle was travelling towards East End when the black Honda Accord travelling in the opposite direction towards George Town was recorded on police mobile radar travelling at excessive speed.
  • The single crewed police vehicle stopped, activated the blue lights and on turning around the Honda Accord was out of sight, a short time later the police officer came upon the vehicle collision, there was no police pursuit.
  • Police can confirm reports that the Honda Accord did have several conchs on board.
  • Early indications are that the two male passengers in the Honda vehicle were travelling in the open trunk of the vehicle.
  • Superintendent Robert Graham RCIPS has been appointed to oversee this investigation, Chief Inspector Owens will remain as the point of contact for all media enquiries.
  • A police family liaison officer has been appointed for all parties involved.
  • Consulates for the deceased nationals have been contacted and every effort is being made to notify next of kin for the deceased persons.
  • Police are appealing to any witnesses who have any information to contact them contact details to follow, particularly we believe the visiting UK nationalshave family or friends living on the island to contact police asap.
  • Police also send out there sincere condolences to all family and friends of the persons involved in this tragic accident.
