America’s Stolen Guns

Stolen guns, as opposed to those lawfully purchased, contribute to a substantial number of crimes in the U.S. Unfortunately, we rarely have conversations that explore the criminal’s impact on crime.

We’ve completed a comprehensive analysis of stolen guns in the U.S. Here are a few of the highlights from that report:

  • On average, 200,000 guns are stolen annually. However, fewer guns were stolen in 2021 than in 2017 despite historical rates of firearm sales.
  • Over 85% of prison inmates interviewed in 2016 used a firearm sourced from somewhere other than a lawful dealer.
  • Only 10% of all stolen guns are ever used in a crime, but most criminals purchase a stolen firearm from underground dealers rather than stealing it themselves.

It shouldn’t be a secret that stolen firearms in the hands of criminals pose a risk to America’s communities. Furthermore, it is rarely lawful gun owners who commit crimes.
