I had high hopes of a unified
government when the Alden McLaughlin government came to power and I
backed it as did my wife, Joan.

Slowly we watched it drift further away
from the ideals of its roots – the Caymanians.

With dismay we watched it cater to the
whims and business ideals of the new breeds that came here obtained
their status, and wined and dined the people that mattered.

I looked upon, at first with favour the three major projects, the cruise berthing facility, the waste disposal facility and the improvements to Smith Bacardere.

Then came the secrecy.

The waste disposal facility, although a
company to build it was found, nothing happened and government would
not disclose the reasons.

The cruise berthing facility was kept
so secret we weren't told who the bidders were, and whether China
Harbour was one of them or not. Cruise ship personnel appeared on the
government platform at the public meeting to tell all (mainly that
the large cruise ships wouldn't be visiting us) but told us nothing
and then afterwards it was discovered were actually one of the
bidders.

The removal of the public servant in
charge of the environment from the committee set up to oversee the
planning, designs and impact on the environment for the cruise
berthing facility.

The forcing of a referendum by the
opposition and the boasting by the premier that anyone not voting
would be counted as a 'yes' vote for it so only the 'No's need vote
and they would have to get 51% of the number of registered voters to
win.

The pushing through of the date of the
referendum so the new voters on the registered lists would be
excluded.

The recently publish report from the
Environmental Assessment Board that has revealed attempts by
government to sell the much touted redesign as more environmentally
friendly may not be true. There is no evidence to support any of
their claims. Also not revealed is the decline in the job numbers
that were in government’s original business case.

Such now is the distrust of anything government is saying that few believe them when they said their proposals to enhance Smith Barcadere would not mean cruise ship passengers and other businesses would be able to market trips there.

The protest to the project has
triggered an announcement today that government has now decided to
abandon the enhancement.

Our premier has announced he will now
appeal the ruling that the Referendum was unconstitutional.

His own party – the PPM/Progressives
is leaking like a sieve. He is standing by a government colleague he
once stood poles apart who admitted he had assaulted a woman who was
trying to help him. And he praised a proposed 60 ft tower to be built
in Camana Bay as 'iconic'.

What has happened?

There is disunity everywhere. When will
it stop. When the country finally runs out of money.

Dare I mention coronaviris and why we have to send our samples overseas for testing? Didn't anyone realise months and months ago it might reach here?

And last but not least, our addition to the EU blacklist because we didn't pass the new required laws in time!
