Residents across the Cayman Islands reported feeling shaking on Tuesday, with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirming a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred at 08:42 local time, located 27 miles southeast of Bodden Town, Cayman Islands.

The confirmation provides the first official seismic measurement for the event, including its magnitude, location and timing. At the time of publication, there were no tsunami watches, warnings or advisories in effect for the Caribbean region.

The Caymanian Journal understands residents across several districts felt the shaking shortly after the earthquake. The publication has contacted Hazard Management Cayman Islands for comment and further verification regarding the event and any response measures.

A source at the Law Courts in George Town said the courthouse was initially evacuated as a precaution after the shaking was felt. However, the source confirmed that proceedings were not suspended and court operations continued from 09:15.

Why USGS Confirmation Matters

The U.S. Geological Survey operates one of the world’s most comprehensive global seismic monitoring networks, analysing data from thousands of seismometers in near real time. Its earthquake catalogue is widely relied upon by governments, emergency management agencies and scientists because it provides independently verified information on an earthquake’s location, magnitude, depth and timing.

While public reports of shaking are valuable in helping identify where an earthquake may have been felt, they cannot independently determine the source or strength of an event. Instrumental analysis is required to confirm whether shaking was caused by a local earthquake, a distant seismic event or another source.

Cayman’s Active Tectonic Setting

The Cayman Islands are located along the boundary between the Caribbean Plate and the North American Plate, where the plates move past each other along the Cayman Trough.

This transform fault system makes earthquakes a regular feature of the region. Most are small and cause little or no damage, but larger events have occurred historically, including the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of January 2020, which was felt strongly across the Cayman Islands.

The islands’ location means residents can experience earthquakes generated locally as well as shaking from events elsewhere in the wider Caribbean region.

By contrast, a separate magnitude 5.2 earthquake confirmed by the USGS earlier Tuesday near Puerto Santa, Peru, occurred at 08:24 local time (UTC-5). The event was located 151 kilometres west-southwest of Puerto Santa, Peru, along the Peru-Chile subduction zone, where the Nazca Plate is forced beneath the South American Plate.

Although several earthquakes can occur globally on the same day, events occurring on separate tectonic systems are generally considered unrelated unless scientific evidence indicates otherwise.

Officials Urge Caution

John Tibbetts, Director General of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS), said residents should continue to take a cautious approach following earthquake events.

"Whenever there's an earthquake, we would lean on the side of caution. You never know if there's going to be another earthquake or you never know if there's going to be a tsunami produced from it. And the best way to do is stay away from the beaches and what have you, and get inland to higher areas and just continue to monitor the situation," Tibbetts said.

Tibbetts said that while there were no tsunami warnings active at the time of publication, residents should continue monitoring official information following seismic activity and follow any guidance issued by authorities.

At the time of publication, there were no reports of damage or injuries following Tuesday’s earthquake.

At 09:42, the Cayman Islands Government confirmed there is no tsunami threat and no significant damage or impacts have been reported following the earthquake. Residents across the Cayman Islands may have experienced moderate shaking, and aftershocks remain possible over the coming hours or days.
