Cayman's Waters Still Rely on Century-Old Maps

The UK Hydrographic Office's latest publication detailing findings from its "Beyond the Reef" Caribbean expedition has renewed attention on the growing importance of hydrographic surveying across the region. During the six-week mission, from 13 January to 25 February 2026, a team of 46 scientists aboard the Royal Research Ship James Cook surveyed more than 25,000 square kilometres of previously unexplored seabed around Anguilla, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Cayman Islands, collecting data to support maritime safety, marine conservation and scientific research.
"As a world-leading centre for hydrography, the UKHO was primarily tasked with conducting bathymetric surveys to measure and map the depth and characteristics of the seabed," said Rosa Crespo Sanchidrián, Senior Hydrographic Specialist at the UK Hydrographic Office. "These insights had a range of applications, from supporting research into biodiversity to ensuring safety of navigation."
She noted that many existing nautical charts of the region still rely on data collected more than a century ago using lead-line surveys, making modern hydrographic surveys critical to improving understanding of the underwater environment.
The expedition also draws attention to a separate hydrographic programme completed between 2024 and 2025, when the UK Hydrographic Office, Saildrone and the Cayman Islands Government carried out one of the Caribbean's most ambitious seabed mapping projects. Using an autonomous wind-powered surface vessel over approximately 300 mission days, the survey mapped around 90,000 square kilometres of the Cayman Islands' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), creating the first comprehensive high-resolution baseline of the territory's waters. The data is now being processed by the UKHO before being incorporated into updated nautical charts and supporting wider marine planning.
Announcing the project in August 2024, then Premier Juliana O'Connor-Connolly said the survey would strengthen evidence-based policymaking.
"Our waters hold such great value to us for a myriad of reasons, ranging from recreational to economic. Conducting this assessment will allow our government to make data-driven decisions that will strengthen our policies and legislation as it relates to our maritime infrastructure."
Once validated and processed, the survey data will be incorporated into updated nautical charts while also supporting marine conservation, fisheries management and wider maritime planning.
Why hydrographic surveys matter
Hydrography is the science of measuring and mapping the seabed. Surveys record water depths, identify submerged hazards and capture the shape of the seafloor, providing the foundation for the nautical charts used by commercial shipping, cruise vessels, fishing boats and recreational mariners.
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) says hydrography underpins "almost every other activity associated with the sea", supporting not only safe navigation but also coastal management, environmental protection, scientific research and the sustainable use of marine resources. Governments that are party to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) are also required to provide and maintain hydrographic services and nautical charts to support safe navigation.
For ports serving the cruise industry, accurate charting has become increasingly important as vessels continue to increase in size. Port authorities rely on up-to-date seabed information when assessing whether larger ships can be accommodated safely, while hydrographic surveys also help identify underwater hazards and inform decisions on dredging, harbour improvements and navigational routes.
Natural processes continually reshape the marine environment. Storms, shifting currents and sediment movement can alter channels and approaches, while wrecks and other underwater obstructions may emerge over time. Without regular surveys, hazards can remain undetected, increasing navigational risk and potentially affecting a port's commercial competitiveness.

Maritime accidents have also demonstrated that accurate hydrographic information is only one part of safe navigation. The Costa Concordia disaster off the Italian island of Giglio in 2012 followed an unauthorised deviation from the vessel's planned route. While Italian investigators concluded the grounding resulted primarily from human error and failures on the bridge, the accident also prompted scrutiny of the navigational charts used during the approach, reinforcing the importance of accurate hydrographic information alongside sound bridge procedures when vessels operate close to coastal hazards.
The same data also supports environmental management. Detailed seabed mapping helps identify coral reefs, seagrass beds and other sensitive habitats, allowing governments to consider measures such as anchoring restrictions, marine protected areas and coastal planning using more accurate scientific evidence.
Grenada illustrates the commercial case
Grenada demonstrates how hydrographic information can influence maritime planning. In 2016, cruise operators told the Grenada Tourism Authority that outdated nautical charts were limiting cruise calls. The concern prompted a high-resolution hydrographic survey of St George's harbour and its approaches under the UK Government's Commonwealth Marine Economies Programme.
The UK Hydrographic Office replaced sparse nineteenth-century lead-line observations with modern multibeam survey data while identifying previously uncharted wrecks and underwater obstructions that were subsequently incorporated into updated nautical charts.
Cruise calls increased following the survey programme, although available evidence does not establish that improved charting alone caused the increase. Broader growth in cruise demand and investment in port infrastructure are also likely to have contributed. The project nevertheless demonstrated how improved seabed information can support decisions affecting navigation, infrastructure and economic development.
Modern technology transforms seabed mapping
Hydrographic surveying has changed dramatically over the past century. Earlier generations of surveyors relied on weighted lead lines that measured depth one sounding at a time. Today's multibeam echosounders emit thousands of sound pulses every second, mapping wide swathes of the seabed in a single pass and producing detailed three-dimensional models of underwater terrain.
The Cayman survey collected more than 900 sound velocity profiles across waters ranging from approximately 20 metres to more than 7,000 metres deep. Before the project, only about 20,000 square kilometres of the EEZ had been surveyed using modern multibeam sonar. Lower-resolution datasets from the mission will also contribute to the international Seabed 2030 initiative, which aims to produce the first complete map of the world's ocean floor.
More than navigation
The UKHO's latest publication highlights how hydrographic surveying has evolved beyond its traditional role of producing nautical charts. Increasingly, the same data is being used to support biodiversity research, fisheries management, marine spatial planning, climate resilience and conservation.
For the Cayman Islands, where healthy seas support tourism, fisheries and maritime trade, understanding what lies beneath the surface has become increasingly important. As governments seek to balance economic development with the protection of fragile marine ecosystems, accurate hydrographic data provides the evidence needed to guide decisions on navigation, conservation and coastal development.
Attention now turns to the UK Hydrographic Office, which is processing the Cayman survey before incorporating it into revised nautical charts. While no publication timetable has been announced, the updated charts are expected to become the first official navigational products to reflect one of the most comprehensive modern surveys ever undertaken of the territory's waters, providing a new foundation for maritime safety and marine management.
